Anti-oxidants

================== ARTICLE START ==================
Flavonoids are highly beneficial anti-oxidant compounds found
in many fruits and vegetables, as well as tea, red wine and even
beer, and it's now well established that a plentiful intake of
anti-oxidants through foods, drinks and supplements is vital for
optimal human health.
Anti-oxidants operate to neutralise the activity of so-called
"free radicals"; compounds produced in the body as by-products
of normal biochemical reactions, but which may nevertheless be
highly damaging as they produce oxidative reactions damaging to
cell structures. Ultimately this damage may contribute to the
development of degenerative diseases characteristic of ageing,
including cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's Alzheimer's and
even some cancers.
The best known anti-oxidant nutrients are vitamins C and E,
although these can only function properly when supported by
adequate supplies of a wide variety of micro-nutrients, which
include many of the flavonoids found in common fruits and
vegetables. These compounds may therefore be regarded as
important elements in the body's anti-oxidant defences, but many
of the more than 4,000 flavonoids identified have also been
hailed for their beneficial effects on the immune system and
anti-inflammatory properties.
From the point of view of incorporating flavonoids into a daily
health regime, the good thing is the ease with which this can be
achieved. Flavonoids are very widely found in fruits,
vegetables, and even drinks normally regarded, for other
reasons, as unhealthy. So even a diet ordinarily well provided
with common fruits and vegetables may provide anything up to
800mg of various flavonoids.
Authoritative research has indicated that this level of
flavonoid consumption may help protect against coronary heart
disease and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), an
important precursor of both heart disease and stroke. These
remain two of the major causes of premature mortality and
disability in the Western world, and to this extent the UK
government and health advisors' frequent advice to consume five
servings of fruit and vegetables each day is well founded.
The most potent of all the anti-oxidant flavonoids is believed
to be a compound called quercetin, which is widely found in
common or garden vegetables. The consumption of fruits with
their skins on, such as apples, pears, grapes, bilberries,
tomatoes etc will also provide a good supply. But perhaps the
richest source is onions, a foodstuff also known since ancient
times as a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral and
anti-inflammatory agent.
There's no doubt that a diet including plentiful supplies of
fresh fruit and vegetables can only be beneficial to health. But
the anti-oxidant properties of the flavonoids found in many
common, even supposedly unhealthy, beverages should not be
neglected.
For example, the anti-oxidant properties of the catechin
polyphenols found in black and green tea and red wine are now
well known and attested. But, as remarkable as it may sound,
there is now evidence that even beer may contain unique
anti-oxidants equal in potency to vitamin E. The flavonoid
compounds, xanthohumol and isoxanthumol appear to be found only
in beer and the hops that flavour it and although they have not
been studied directly, there is speculation that they may be
responsible for the remarkable and counter-intuitive finding
that lager type beers may be more effective as anti-oxidants
than red wine, grape juice or even green tea. Obviously there
are other reasons, not least its high calorific value, why you
wouldn't want to depend on a high consumption of lager for your
anti-oxidants, but in moderation it may indeed be beneficial.
In fact studies suggest that these particular flavonoid
anti-oxidants may have a particular role in combatting the
oxidation of low density lipids (LDLs), the so–called "bad
cholesterol", which is a known risk factor for the development
of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The other main
fat-soluble anti-oxidant which fights this process is vitamin E,
and although there is evidence that the anti-oxidant potential
of xanthohumol and isoxanthumol may be comparable with that of
the vitamin, it is also clear that each of the three compounds
functions best in the presence of each of the others.
Whilst orthodox medicine concedes, in fact insists, that
further research is necessary, the implications of these
findings are exciting; suggesting that there may be many more as
yet undiscovered benefits of flavonoids. As always, however, the
holistic functioning of the body means that maximum benefits
will only be obtained by the consumption of the widest possible
variety of all these compounds. As flavonoids are not yet widely
available as supplements, this consumption is best achieved
through the foodstuffs and beverages which combine them as
nature intended. Such a flavonoid rich diet can only be of
benefit to the action of the better known anti-oxidants, such as
vitamins E and C, which are more readily obtainable in
supplement form.

Do you find yourself with a white tongue and suffer from a
feminine itch? You may have a yeast infection and be calling it
something else instead. Were you recently on an antibiotic for a
respiratory infection or another health issue? Often people
mistake a yeast infection for something else and do not properly
diagnose their health.
Additionally if one uses steroids or certain birth control
pills, a yeast infection may occur. Wearing damp clothing such
as a bathing suit or workout clothing can help a yeast infection
breed. Tight clothing or pants can also create problems as can
wearing nylon pantyhose. It is best to wear cotton underwear and
get out of swimsuits immediately into dry clothing. In hot
weather, just change into a t-shirt and shorts with cotton
underwear after swimming rather than remain in a wet bathing
suit.
There are lots of remedies listed for yeast infections but some
are not safe. It is important to use wisdom and common sense as
you can hurt yourself using boric acid or anything acidic in the
wrong concentration. Remember you are dealing with sensitive
tissue when you have a yeast infection.
Jarvis and others speak of apple cider vinegar as a nice folk
home remedy for yeast infections. The proportion of apple cider
vinegar to water is important as it can burn your skin and hurt
the tissue. Do not just use home remedies without research
however organic they may sound. This is an issue with boric acid
as well.
Have you seen that some of the home remedies for yeast
infection mention the use of yogurt. This is because the yogurt
products due to being probiotics can replace destroyed bacteria
from antibiotics and other medications. Be sure there aren't
additives in the yogurt however. If you are using yogurts that
have sugar, you will be creating another breeding ground for
bacteria.
We're a culture that likes the quick fix, but constant
vigilance is necessary to prevent a yeast infection from taking
over again. It needs to be a way of life and not just a
temporary bandaid. Drinking buttermilk can be a tool to keep the
body on the right track. Having a well thought out system and
plan rather than haphazardly trying different supplements is the
best way to both prevent and cure a yeast infection.
You can find liquid or pill supplements of acidopholous or
bifidus in the local health food stores. These are often in the
refrigerator department due to the bacteria needing this. This
can be a regular supplement to keep the body maintenance. There
are some probiotics that do not need to be refrigerated but on
the whole , the ones with the highest count do and these are
excellent to restore your body's ph and create the right
internal environment.
Your body needs to have it's ph balanced properly and this will
help keep things even for you. Keep a regular routine so that
you don't get recurring yeast infections and remember that this
takes discipline and a system. You will get new energy again and
it is worth the small dietary sacrifices.

Got your interest?
No I haven't gone to the dark side.
The truth is that you can make fat burning supplements "work
like magic" and "do the work for you". Too good to be true?
Well, what's the catch?
You got me there. There is one. Sort of.
As with many ironies in life, those who need fat loss
supplementation the least, get the most benefit from it. Aside
from a lean muscular body, eating clean and training smart as a
lifestyle allows you to access the magic bullet of fat loss - a
pill that allows you to shed body fat whilst maintaining your
current lifestyle and eating habits.
By stoking your metabolism with plenty of fibrous vegetables,
lean protein and good fats and keeping your body free of toxins,
you create the best fat incinerating machine possible. Your
calories are in balance and when you decide to " kick it up a
notch" and add some fat burning supplements you end up with a
nice metabolic boost that sharpens you up fairly quickly without
losing muscle or strength. I know guys who have literally dieted
for a week, sometimes two at most and entered a bodybuilding
contest and placed, and even won. That's the power of mastering
your body and keeping a great physique for life. You are never
far away from your best and when summer comes you literally
flick a few switches and you're set.
You see, this is the power of working with the body and not
against it. Seriously how much untapped potential are you
leaving on the table when it comes to serious weight loss and
explosive, high quality muscle gain? Just by eating right - in
accordance with what your body requires to be able to carry out
effective weight loss and muscle gain and training with a clear
purpose - in accordance with how your body needs to process the
fuel (nutrition) you feed it, is the so called 'magic pill' you
may have been looking for after all this time! Can you believe
it, after all this time, the most powerful fat loss secret known
to man has been lying dormant inside of you.
Do you know, when Michelangelo carved out the Statue of David,
that masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, he said that the
statue, in all its glory, was already inside marble. In other
words, all he did was carve away what was always there from the
beginning! This is a metaphor for anyone who has tried to lose
weight and failed - the weight loss keys to the kingdom are
already inside you, all you really require is the desire to
understand how to wield the most awesome fat stripping machine
in your immediate possession. In all seriousness, take the time
to understand just the basics of your biology where it comes to
weight loss and muscle gain and what might seem like a little
bit of knowledge has the power to transform your body and life
beyond belief in record time.
So Please, leave the 3 month "summer slim downs" for the
masses. Let them waste a quarter of their year, year after year
spinning their wheels. There is a better way that is well worth
mastering.

There is currently no cure for congestive heart failure, rather
there are things that you can do to help lengthen your life and
protect your heart from further injury. Treatment is a matter of
changing your lifestyle and a mixture of drug therapy, which
will alter your quality of your life.
The medical field's great improvements over the past twenty
years has grown in leaps and bounds. Lifestyle changes remain
fundamentally the same in combating congestive heart failure -
quit smoking, lose excessive weight, drink less alcohol, and eat
healthy low saturated fat and low salt foods. After that do not
forget to exercises which is helpful for most patients. This is
fabulous advice that is a major key to preventing congestive
heart failure but the most significant is the medical treatment.
This is where your medical with your MD is very significant.
Don't attempt to try to self diagnose or worse, prescribe your
own medicines. The medical attendant is the only individual well
equipped to provide you with the applicable medical treatment.
The heart such as other parts of our bodies can malfunction in
varying ways. That is why we had better trust the cardiologist -
a specialist in the medical field. One of the the most
commonplace medicines prescribed for patients with congestive
heart failure is a beta-blocker. The beta-blocker reduces your
heart rate and it's output of blood by counteracting a hormone
found in the body called noradrenalin. While this drug can
prevent congestive heart failure, it isn't recommended for
anyone with severe heart failure.
For those patients who suffer from fluid retention and/or high
blood pressure due to congestive heart failure the medical field
suggests that a diuretic will help square things but you should
be aware of some of the potential side effects which are loss of
potassium in your system, weakness, muscle cramps, and even
joint pains. Let your family doctor be informed right away if
you feel any detrimental side effects from the diuretic
administered.
This is just an example of some of the drugs used in the
medical field that can help ward off congestive heart failure.
There are other treatments that the medical field uses and they
can be just as valuable.
Congestive heart failure can become undeniably extreme and that
is why the medical field has been experimenting with heart
transplants and mechanical pumps, which are attached to the
heart. There is another experimental procedure for severe heart
failure, which is accessible at a few U.S. medical centers. This
procedure which is called cardiomyoplasty, involves detaching
one end of a muscle in the patients back, wrapping it around the
heart, and then suturing the muscle to the heart. An implanted
electric stimulator causes the back muscle to contract and pump
blood from the heart.
The medical field also has a further surgical procedure that
can be used called mitral valve repair which may help extend and
improve the lives of people with congestive heart failure. This
procedure aims to correct such issues as leaky valves resulting
from cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, by surgically
inserting a flexible annuloplasty ring at the mitral valve
opening.
The medical field has enjoyed great strides in medicines and in
surgical procedures that considerably raise the quality of life
that we take pleasure in. The medical field has experimented
with such things as healthy heart diets and specialized
exercises that can only help to improve the quality of life. Now
you can help correct congestive heart failure with any life
style changes and medical advice from your Physician.

Whether you travel by plane, train, or automobile, sitting in
confined spaces for long periods can cause a number of problems
– considerable pressure on joints, crimped circulation,
increased risk of blood clots, stiff, cramped muscles, increased
fatigue, back and neck pain and knee discomfort.
Travel tips for planes and trains:
Good posture and proper body mechanics are the key to
prevention of back, neck, and joint discomfort when traveling.
Try these:
• Make frequent posture changes: get up every forty-five
minutes or so to walk or stand.
• Adjust the seat as best you can to an upright position.
• Slide your bottom back, until it touches the back of the
seat.
• If there's a big space between your lower back and the chair
seat, use a lumbar pillow or rolled sweater and place it behind
your back.
• Use a traveler's pillow to decrease neck strain when
snoozing.
• If your feet don't touch the floor, place a backpack or
carry-on on the floor to rest your feet on.
• Shift weight frequently to reduce prolonged pressure on any
given point.
• Hips and knees should be at ninety-degree angles.
• Keep shoulders relaxed.
• Let forearms and elbows rest on armrests.
• If armrests are too low or hard, use a small pillow under
each forearm.
Travel Exercises:
1. Circle feet in one direction then the other.
2. Pump feet by lifting heels, keeping toes on floor.
3. Pump feet like pushing on a car accelerator.
4. Tap toes like windshield wiper blades on a car. Keep your
heels on the floor and tap toes from left to right.
5. Inhale, pull oxygen all the way down to the bottom of the
rib cage. Feel your chest expand. Exhale and pull your
abdominals in. Hold them in to a slow count of ten. Do not hold
your breath. Relax and repeat often.
6. Shrug and circle shoulders.
7. Press shoulder blades back towards spine and then down
towards waist.
Travel tips for automobiles:
We all spend a lot of time coming and going in our cars. Most
of the time, we're slumped over the wheel. Good driving posture
can help a driver stay comfortable and alert.
Adjust your car seat so it will help keep your body properly
aligned while you drive. All these little adjustments will make
a big difference in your posture and comfort.
1. Bring the back of your car seat to its straightest position.
Ideally, it should incline no more than 110 degrees.
2. Sit with your bottom all the way back, so it touches the
back of the backrest. Make sure rib cage is not drooping. Lift
it up slightly.
3. Adjust the headrest so you can sit with the back of your
head resting against it. This position puts your head directly
over your spine and allows your neck muscles to relax while your
drive.
4. Most of us were taught to hold the steering wheel at the ten
and two o'clock position. They don't teach that anymore in
driving schools. Now they ask you to hold on at an eight o'clock
and four o'clock position.
This position is safer in the event that your airbag deploys.
This position is also better for your posture as it allows your
arms to hang more vertically by your sides, which allows your
neck muscles to relax, greatly reducing discomfort and fatigue.
5. Don't forget to buckle up your seat belt.
Car exercises:
The following exercises can be done when you are stopped at a
red light. They will help strengthen your mid and upper back as
well as your abdominals.
1. Lift up your rib cage and press the back of your head
against the headrest. Stay lifted that way while you drive.
2. Press the back of your shoulders into the seat as if you
were trying to bring your shoulder blades closer together. Hold
for ten seconds without holding your breath then relax. Repeat
several times.
3. Tighten your abdominals. Take a deep breath. As you exhale,
pull your belly button toward your spine and hold for ten
seconds. See if you can feel the bottom of your rib cage pull
in. Don't hold your breath. Gradually build up to holding the
abdominals for thirty seconds.
